As a designer, it’s very important for me to keep up with the current trends. I regularly get information and inspiration from various UX and UI resources such as NN Group, UX Collective, Behance or Dribbble and may article from individual designers. These are a few of the UI and UX trends that I came across with:

Illustrations: Oversized, bold and colourful graphics and illustrations are definitely the biggest trends. Depending on the purpose and the type of product, use of relevant graphics and illustration gives the UI so much character and personality. Illustrations are also used more often in onboardings and tutorial parts of an app.

Animation and motion image: Microinteractions has been widespread amongst many apps and products for quite some time. Some even are so subtle that many users barely notice them, however, they are a useful part of the design as they can facilitate the user flow or guide the user to make important actions. Now animations are also playing a big role in websites and apps User Interfaces. Animations make the UI to stand out and it creates a fun and dynamic interface.

Neumorphism: Neumorphism or soft UI is becoming very popular. This word is created from mixing the two words “new” and “Skeuomorphism”. Neumorphism applies real-life like effects such as depth, shadow, glow to create a plastic-like surface. It is a very precise and clean way of design and I personally really like it, However, I am not sure how accessible these types of UI are.

Asymmetrical layout: Asymmetrical layouts are very popular especially in website design. It gives the UI so much character and it certainly creates a more dynamic interface that the traditional template design system.

Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality: VR and AR have entered the game and entertainment industry for some time. Now other types of apps are emerging using these technologies. VirtualSpeech app is an app that helps users practise public speaking in various settings by using VR technology. Ikea also has launched it’s AR mobile application which is called Ikea Place. It uses iOS 11’s ARKit technology and enables users to scale Ikea’s product dimensions against their own room’s size in real-time.

The trends that I have mentioned here are just a few of the visual and UX trends. With the industry always advancing fast new trends are emerging and moving forward almost day by day.
